2022 Garden birds of Edinburgh, Scotland.

Welcome to 2022! Hopefully this year will be a great year for birds! Once again injury and recovery from operations including an operation of the heart are taking their toll.

The House Sparrows have really taken up home in the garden, as the garden is transformed from a place where pesticides and weed killers were used for 40+ years into an organic garden and hopefully wildlife wonderland, the number of insects and soil life has increased dramatically. I have been removing the showy plants that had no wildlife value and replacing with plants that benefit bees, butterflies and birds. There’s a list of plants I have put together over here: Plants to help bees, butterflies and birds.

Once again I am using Garden Birds* food due to the great price and excellent service, the most popular in my garden is now the UltivaĀ® Wheat Free Seed Mix* the basic: UltivaĀ® Everyday Seed Mix* is also popular with almost every bird that visits the garden especially the house sparrows.

December 18th – Also had a flock of yellowhammer in the garden, the weather has been bad, and they must have been able to find food in the garden easier.

* the Red Kite was flying amongst 100s of gulls and swifts as it was an ant day. I was shocked to see it and will admit, let out a yell “KITE” and pointed, such a stunning bird. A few friends have told me they are quite rare around Edinburgh and the Lothians. Sadly the sighting was short and didn’t have a chance to grab a camera.
The Black-headed gulls never seem to land but the Lesser black-backed gull, Great black-backed gulls and herring gulls are regular visitors. The Lesser black-backed gulls are the most common in the garden and we have named one Steven Seagull.

2021 Garden birds of Edinburgh, Scotland.

Welcome to 2021! After breaking my vertebrae and rupturing a few disks again in 2021 my list will once again be from my Edinburgh garden. The garden gets most of the common garden birds in Scotland and occasionally a great tick such as a Redpoll or a Redstart as in previous years. Winter brings in some fantastic birds to watch and listen to, such as Redwing and Fieldfare – just had both of these in the garden at 1pm on New Years day, didn’t see either in 2020.

This year I have started using Garden Birds* food due to the great price and excellent service, the most popular in my garden is the basic: UltivaĀ® Everyday Seed Mix*. It’s very popular with almost every bird that visits the garden especially the house sparrows.

I am struggling to stand on most days due to nerves in my back stopping my legs from working due to Generalised Dystonia and the broken vertebrae. It looks like it will be a small list this year.

What a difference gardening for wildlife can make.

I put this list up with a few photos on Instagram you can see the post here: 3 foxes and a robin.

Garden Bird List for October 22nd 2013:

Roughly 1 year 4 months after moving in:

  • 1. Blackbird x 2
  • 2. House Sparrow x 1
  • 3. Robin x 1
  • 4. Woodpigeon x 1

Total: 5 birds

Species: 4

After moving in I had noticed a few Robins that looked to have died from poisoning, possibly from the use of pesticides and herbicides by the previous owners.  I have a feeling their use was so high the amount had built up and in the few insects and worms left in the garden were full of pesticides, sadly the build up was too much for the birds that did try and feed in the garden.

  • 4. Coal Tit x 2

2018 Edinburgh, Scotland Garden Bird List

Itā€™s time now for the start of my 2018 Garden bird list 2017 showed most of the common British garden birds with a total of 34 birds, unlike 2016 where I had a few more unusual birds for a city garden and a total of 40.

Sadly Dystonia will mainly have me stuck at home again,Ā update August 2018 I was studying horticulture at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh to learn more about making my garden wildlife friendly sadly I broke my ribs and tore my oblique muscles in February and then broke a couple of vertebrae in May it means my studies are on hold again.Ā  I may try and do a separate RBGE bird list as the gardens have a great diversity of bird species there and are fantastic to watch.

Iā€™m currently working on a gardening website that will hopefully be up and running later in 2018, it will obviously have a fair bit about wildlife, and the book Sammy The Shrew for sale which is raising money for charities.

2017 Edinburgh Garden Bird List

Like 2016 I sadly wonā€™t be getting to do a lot of walking and birding away from my house, as Iā€™m stuck at home most days Iā€™ve been increasing the amount of wildlife friendly plants (Iā€™d do this anyway even if I wasnā€™t housebound) in the garden and hoping that over time this will attract and help more birds.

IĀ had a good garden bird list for 2016 ā€“ 2016 Edinburgh Garden Bird ListĀ ā€“ Ā with the addition of the first Redstart Iā€™ve ever seen, great to have a lifer in my garden! All up for 2016 there were 40 bird species I managed to identify. Ā There were geese that flew over that I didnā€™t manage to ID and a few warblers in the garden very briefly that I also couldnā€™t ID, I will be training up on warblers to see if I can get them for 2017.

To attract birds to my garden, as well as gardening for wildlife when I can, I use RSPB food and feeders, find great products at their website, also great for gifts for nature lovers. Ā I am a member of the RSPB and SOC as they do great work for UK and World birds.

2016 EdinburghGarden Bird List

I was in for an operation on 30th of December 2015 and I probably wonā€™t get to leave my house much again during 2016 (except doctor appointments). Ā My generalised dystonia is getting worse and causing many more injuries. Ā This year I figure Iā€™ll just have a garden bird list, birds in the garden & above and only update this one post.

To attract birds to my garden, as well as gardening for wildlife when I can, I use RSPB food and feeders, find great products at their website, also great for gifts for nature lovers.

Garden bird list and birds of Gardening Scotland

earlier today I posted a few pictures from the Isle of May trip http://www.wbist.com/archives/2899, but a friend on twitter @RoseCottageFife wrote a much more in depth and informative piece about here trip to the Isle of May here:Ā http://rosecottageeastneuk.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/the-jewel-of-forth-nature-lover-day.htmlĀ and thereā€™s the Isle of May Blog from 15th of May announcing they do have puffins:Ā http://isleofmaynnr.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/yes-we-do-have-puffins.htmlĀ ā€“ I would love to spend time out there as aĀ scientistĀ orĀ conservationist, only problem is I have no degree in either!!! Ā Silly me forĀ pursuingĀ computers and photographyā€¦ Maybe they need a professional photographer!? Ā Would love that, Iā€™ll bring my own food!

My bird list today, thereā€™s 2 lists as I went to Gardening Scotland and managed a few sightings there:

excellent photos ā€“ very good selection

Glad you liked them, I hope to get a few from last year up, I felt they were better, it was a brighter day and a lot more birds about, the storms and spills of whatever it was down south seem to have taken their toll on the birds up here.

Another great day out at Keukenhof gardens, decent bird list.

Even though I was out doing my real work, photography, I managed to update the savings, ISAs and credit cards over on www.saverscene.co.ukĀ (now closed as I move into gardening as a profession) then a few of the banks went and changed their rates and I had to do it again tonight!!! Ā How inconsiderate of them! Ā I did get out to Keukenhof today and got to see some great birds as well as a few 100 very nice flower photos. Ā I sadly missed by just a few minutes the mating dance of the Great Crested Grebe, a few other birders seemed to take real pleasure in telling me! Ā I didnā€™t see as many bird species today as I did the other day, hereā€™s my list today:

  1. Blackbird
  2. Carrion crow
  3. Chaffinch
  4. Chiffchaff
  5. Coots

thats a good list ā€“ hope to see something similar this weekend as i am heading there myself ā€“ also heading to a spot where there should be a number of birds near where i am staying in Weesp.

Apologies for not yet posting my bird list from Sweden ā€“ i seem to have been so busy this last week or so ā€“ am taking the laptop this weekend so might get a chance when i am in Holland

I have seen the mating dance of the Grebes twice before ā€“ once in Holland too ā€“ and just caught the very end of it in Sweden a few days ago

Weesp does look like a great place for seeing birds! Lots of water around there. I hope you had a great time in Sweden and have a wonderful time in Holland. Iā€™d never seen a Grebe before, so was very happy to see them, when at Keukenhof theyā€™re just round from the Wilhelmina pavilion, after the bridge near the white horse statue, where the river bows a bit, Keukenhof map here:
      http://www.keukenhof.nl/uploads/2013/Plattegrond/2223_kh_plattegrond_2013_v6_lr_def.pdf

Youā€™ll be going at a great time, the flowers are a lot later this year, a lot still werenā€™t out when I was were there! First time Iā€™d been back in 10 years, last time I was 23 and with a heap of Aussie backpackers, good fun, but probably didnā€™t take as much in as I could have.

Totally understand being busy! If I didnā€™t have to take every second day out for putting my feet up Iā€™d probably not have been able to do updates, but I would have got out a bit more to see the birds. Iā€™ve just gone back to bed at 10.20 am to write this! Feels odd and terrible to be spending so much time off my feet!

Iā€™ll try and get a few photos up before you go, ran out of room on my computer, but will move things about tonight.

Yes I saw the Great Crested Grebe on a nest there. As you say the flowers are later this year ā€“ 1 to 2 weeks iā€™d say ā€“ also the birds ā€“ I have seen a Grebe with young there, also Mallard and Mute Swan with young but they were all late this year

KiwiGav said on May 2, 2013

Glad to hear you got to see a good range there. I really have to sort my photos out, I just donā€™t have any room on my computer, itā€™s ridiculous! My photography computer is still packed in storage.

Bird list from Schiphol airport for April 21st.

Sorry the update didnā€™t happen yesterday, once again the free wifi was down at night, Iā€™ve posted a video:Ā http://www.saverscene.com.au/general-chat/7811-bloemencorso-2013-holland-flower-festival-youtube-video.htmlĀ (now closed as I move into gardening as a profession) of theĀ Bloemencorso 2013 Holland Flower Festival parade youtube video. Ā Sadly I didnā€™t get to see it and I didnā€™t get out toĀ Keukenhof gardensĀ yesterday due to my torn ankle tendons, my bird list for yesterday is all from the SchipholĀ airport as thatā€™s where Iā€™m staying at the moment.

  1. Coot
  2. Grey Heron
  3. Jackdaw ā€“ I noticed at the airport these acted more like the pigeons you’d find at many other airports around the world, very interesting to watch.Ā  People mustā€™ve thought I was crazy as I noticed food rubbish in a few bins so I would grab it off the top and scatter it for the Jackdaws, they loved it.
  4. Lapwing
  5. Magpie
  6. Oystercatcher

Iā€™m heading back to the gardens today, Iā€™m going to update the UK finance pages first, including the best ISA rates, credit card offers and savings interest rates, you can find them here:Ā http://www.saverscene.co.uk/ (now closed as I move into gardening as a profession) . Ā Hopefully Iā€™ll have another bumper day watching birds whilst doing my work of photographing flowers!

Robin in Corstorphine Tesco Bakery section, plus Oystercatchers on playing fields.

Another very quiet day in my garden, just 3 types of birds, I added a robin to yesterdayā€™s list as I saw it just before midnight in Tescos Corstorphine hanging out in the bakery section of the store, photo, sorry poor quality from a camera phone:

Robin in Tesco bakery section, enjoying the croissants.

I managed to take a walk down toĀ Saint Margaretā€™s Park in Corstorphine and saw:

  1. Carrion Crow x 3
  2. Oystercatchers x 2
  3. Black-headed Gulls x 5
  4. Gulls ā€“ others, distance was too great to make out but looked to be lesser black-backed or herring. Ā They were paddling in a pretty deep puddle, didnā€™t want to get closer as we had our dog with us.
  5. Woodpigeons x 10
