It was very quiet in the garden today, I gather bad weather put the birds off again!

Today was looking pretty dire, almost nothing then Greenfinches, Blue Tit and a Magpie saved it!  I’d been outside a bit even though it’s been raining heavily and yet there were very few birds in the garden, on my final outing to check the feeders, down to just a few fat balls, coconuts and 1 seed feeder due to birds not taking a lot at present and some of the seed in the feeder started to sprout in the feeder so cut back on what I’m putting out.  The fat is still popular though!  I am hoping that it’s more the fact the birds are in nest and on eggs that they’re not out as much.  I hope to hear a dawn chorus next week if I can manage getting up into the woods in the dim light.  Seems weird thinking “if I can get into woods in dim light” I used to do half my hiking in those conditions for landscape photography!  Enough rambling onto the bird list:

Managed to get out for a walk and added a decent list of birds.

Managed to get out for a walk today, very happy with that! My ankle tendons didn’t even click out of place once!!!  So excited by that, will let you all know how I go tomorrow morning.  Below the birds with a number were in my garden, the rest were out on the walk, many of the birds in the garden were also spotted out on the walk in Corstorphine woods, it was great to see 2 Song Thrush on the fields on the westside of the woods.  I’ve heard there’s green woodpeckers in the area but I haven’t been able to see them yet, my wife has managed to hear them, but not see them in the past.  Here’s the list for today:

  3. Carrion crow 1 – It was carrying nesting material
  4. Chaffinch
  5. Coal Tit
  6. Common Buzzard – pretty sure there was one hovering very high over the fields today.

Birds around Edinburgh mainly from buses and in Edinburgh city gardens.

I was out today, didn’t get to really count the birds, but I did take a list of the birds I saw today:

  1. Blackbird
  2. Blue Tit
  3. Carrion crow
  4. Chaffinch
  5. Dunnock
  6. Lesser black-backed gull
  7. Magpie
  8. Woodpigeon

I had to spend the day sitting in Edinburgh council buildings trying to get a reduction on my council tax due to low earnings, due to a mix of injuries including tearing my ankle tendon on road work in Edinburgh being carried out by Edinburgh council!  However the council made a mistake due to the fact they forgot to send a piece of paper work out to me and then cancelled the application forcing me to try and get another one in.

Very sunny day in Edinburgh but very few birds in the garden.

Lovely and sunny here in Edinburgh today, absolutely beautiful weather!  Almost summer!  However birds don’t want to show themselves again, very few about:

  1. Blackbird x – heard only
  2. Blue Tit x 1
  3. Dunnock x 3
  4. Magpie x 1
  5. Woodpigeon x 3

5 species and I was in the garden almost all day, I took my computer outside and used the wifi which has now been moved to the back of the house and works great outside, even had shorts and a t-shirt on the weather was that nice!  Maybe my ugly mug was scaring them off!

So very windy in the garden I think the birds took shelter.

Sorry to say but the wind was a bit much to be out in the garden, and I think the birds felt the same, there weren’t many around in the garden, gulls were gliding very high in the wind over south Edinburgh, I was also off at the hospital most of the day getting nerves checked, a bit more about that below, I did manage to get the ISA, credit cards and savings done on the Saverscene (now closed as I move into gardening as a profession) site, just haven’t had time to update them on the forum yet.  I will tomorrow.  My garden bird list and one from on the road back from hospital.

  2. Blue Tit x 2, 1 of them chased the long tailed tits off the half coconut feeder.
  3. Carrion crow x 2 – flyovers.
  4. Dunnock x 3
  5. Long-tailed tit x 2
  6. Magpie x 2 – flying to their nest.
  7. Woodpigeon x 9 – on the way to hospital to get electric shocks in my arms and legs to see how my nerves worked, no improvement after surgery.

What terrible weather we’re having, wind, rain and Buddleia Weyeriana, very few birds.

I was in the garden a fair bit today, between rain storms, however very few birds showed, here’s a very minimal list:

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x heard only, an alarm call and sounded like a few birds. Couldn’t see them, they were in a neighbours garden.
  3. Carrion crow x 2 – at different times but 1 had a lot of white in it’s wings, the other was very black.
  4. Dunnock x 3
  5. Long-tailed tit x 2
  6. Woodpigeon x 1

For those trying to attract wildlife to your garden, I learnt about a different very nice looking variety of Buddleia the variety Buddleia Weyeriana, thanks to a post on one of my favourite wildlife garden blogs: Buddleia Weyeriana from Butterflies and Gardens.

Blue tit is back to the RSPB nest box, Common Buzzard high overhead.

The highlights of the day was seeing a Common Buzzard flying very high over head, seeing the blue tit return to the nest box and watching a woodpigeon eat part of an apple core I left out for the birds, if you are a heavy fruit eater like myself apple cores make great bird food!  Here’s my bird list for Saturday 27th:

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 2 – saw one going into the nest box.
  3. Carrion crow x 1
  4. Coal Tit x 1
  5. Common Buzzard x 1

Wow, what a crazy day weather wise, rain, sun, hail, sun, rain, sleet, hail and it’s still lying at 23.00!  I’ve just been outside burning garden waste for more carbon and I couldn’t believe how much was still on the ground!  The weather brought out a few extra birds on the feeders, here’s my garden list:

Gardening, burning to get carbon and a very small bird list.

After being away and having internet problems in the hotel, I get home and I try to do a post and my net’s down.  A bit annoying, back now so I can get my very small garden bird list up for the day, I was outside a fair bit today trying to get rid of horsetail weed and due to the internet being down in the afternoon, managed a few updates on saverscene UK and the Australian version such as a very helpful one for people that travel: travel insurance check that your credit card doesn’t already offer it: You may already have travel insurance on your credit card, no point paying an insurance company (now closed as I move into gardening as a profession) .  Also spent the evening trying to burn cuttings from the garden due to getting rid of a lot of old wood and the council missing my green waste bin twice in the past month.  I’d prefer to have the carbon back in the soil anyway, I would normally leave piles of branches to rot down naturally, however there were far too many due to the garden being neglected for years before we moved in.  We’ve also not set up a good open compost for garden waste and only have a closed one for food scraps, once I’ve got that setup I hope not to need the council green collection and to get all the goodness back into the garden without resorting to burning it.

Anyway. Here’s my bird list for the day, sadly a bit short, but great to see the LTTs and the Bullfinch back:

Back at home watching my garden birds.

It is nice to be back to see the changes that have occurred in just one week of being away, shocked by the amount of Daffodils in my garden, which can be great for attracting finches and I encourage to grow in the right spots in the garden.
This is the first spring I’ve been in the garden and I’m impressed by what’s coming up so far.  As for the birds, not a great deal around, I did see 2 Coal Tits mating, but not sure if the blue tit has continued with the nest at the end of the garden, didn’t see any activity about it at all today.  However that was the same last year in the previous garden, frantic activity for about 4 to 5 days, then nothing for almost 2 weeks, time to sit on eggs maybe?  Then frantic activity for about 16 days, and 4 young eventually fledged.

Here’s the list for today:

  1. Blackbird x 1 – heard only
  2. Blue Tit x 1 – think it’s the one nesting in the nest box, but haven’t seen any birds in the box.
  3. Carrion crow x 1
  4. Coal Tit x 2 – saw them mating.
  5. Dunnock x 3
  6. Greenfinch x 2 – my mum who is visiting from Australia felt these looked like Budgies!  Guess she doesn’t notice the parrot beak to the finch beak, she was a little away from them, so I’ll forgive her.
  7. Magpie x 2
  8. Woodpigeon x 2
