A very grey day today in Edinburgh, spent inside playing Halo on the Xbox

I didn’t get a lot of bird watching today, just when I was outside with Chewie (my dog) as there’s a free Xbox 360 Live Gold weekend in the UK Ā Free Xbox LIVE Gold Weekend March 8th to 10th 2013 in the UKĀ and because I can’t afford a gold membership I’ve been taking advantage of it (not good for my carpal tunnel!). Ā And of course the Rugby was on today, bit disappointed with the Scottish game today, but 18 points, all penalty kicks, was still decent for Scotland.

However I did get out a few times and managed to spot a few birds and I saw the Long-tailed tits every time I was outside today, hopefully it means they’re sticking around the garden somewhere. Ā That’d be great, they’re also very happy with me being 2 meters away from them, very happy with that, my have to get my camera out soon!

Here’s my bird list for day.

  1. Blackbird x – I think there was singing at about 4.30am, however not 100% sure if it was a blackbird, anyone got a good recording?
  2. Carrion crow x 4 – fly overs
  3. Coal Tit x 1
  4. Long-tailed tit x 2
  5. Magpie x 1
  6. Starlings x 9 – flyovers
  7. Woodpigeon x 1

A grey day today, very few birds about.

Very grey and wet again today and little action in the garden, I’m wondering if maybe the Long-tailed Tits are nesting nearby as they’re around a lot of the day at the moment, they flit from my garden to the next and back, great to hear them, one of my favourites!

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 1
  3. Long-tailed tit x 2
  4. Magpie x – Heard but not seen today
  5. Woodpigeon x 3

Magpies getting ready for nesting, small garden bird list.

It was grey, misty and wet here in Edinburgh today, I thought that will bring the birds to the garden searching for food, but I was wrong, a very slow day on the feeders however there were 2 magpies breaking twigs off the tree in the front garden and preparing for a nest, be great to know where they’re nesting! Ā Here’s my garden bird list for today:

  1. Blackbird x 2
  2. Chaffinch x 1 – female
  3. Coal Tit x 1
  4. Long-tailed tit x 2
  5. Magpie x 3 – 2 of them were collecting twigs for nesting
  6. Woodpigeon x 2

I received an email about a free packaging and postage voucher code for the RSPB shop when you spend over £25, more details can be found here:

RSPB free postage voucher code – not sure how long the voucher code goes for as there didn’t seem to be an expiry date.

Back to my garden bird watching.

It

was weird to come back from a few days away and find that the feeder hasn’t gone down at all, at least I’ve not missed any rare species dropping by while I was away! Ā Today although back at home was busy indoors working on a site for my Australian friends who asked for a version of the finance pages I’ve made for the UK and this is what I’ve managed so farĀ Saver Scene Australia Finance (now closed as I move into gardening as a profession)Ā it looks at the best deals for credit cards, cash savings and due to the fact many Australian banks charge for bank accounts, yes; the standard current account we get free here in the UK, I’ve added a section to help my Aussie friends and family find free bank accounts!

Over the next few days I’ll try to write up a bit about Focus on Imaging that I went to in Birmingham, where I’d hoped to get out for some birding, but spent every day at the NEC seeing as much as I could in the time I was there. Ā Danny Green showed some great photos if you haven’t seen his work he does some great wildlife photography Danny Green PhotographyĀ well worth checking.

  1. Blackbird x 2
  2. Blue Tit x 1
  3. Carrion crow x 1
  4. Coal Tit x 1
  5. Dunnock x 1
  6. Magpie x 9
  7. Woodpigeon x 3

If you haven’t already make sure you cut back your Buddleia/Buddleja so that new growth can sprout new growth which will bring more flowers, see whatĀ Lyn from Butterflies and Gardens did to hers over the weekend here:Ā Buddleia pruning.Ā  Hope to have my own gardening advice website up and running in 2019.

Been away for a few days & indoors so haven’t seen a lot.

Hi all, sorry for the slow updates, I’ve been away for the past few days and haven’t really had a chance to see many birds, here’s my list:

Sunday morning, my garden:

  1. Blackbird x 2
  2. Dunnock x 1
  3. Magpie x 1

Sunday Birmingham airport:

  1. Kestrel x 1 – first for the year.
  2. Starlings x 2

Monday was indoors all day and saw nothing

Tuesday managed to see about 20 pigeons flying past hotel window before heading to the Focus On Imaging halls at the NEC Birmingham, but after that nothing for the rest of the day.Ā  Tomorrow should get back to normal with hopefully a good list of garden birds.

A very warm day in Edinburgh and a great day of birding and gardening!

Wow what a wonderful day in Edinburgh, I actually think I got sunburnt! Ā It was definitely T-shirt weather, great for being out in the garden and there were a lot of birds around, finally got a full set of tits that visit my garden in one day, here’s the list:

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 1
  3. Bullfinch x 1 Male
  4. Carrion crow x 2
  5. Coal Tit x 1
  6. Common Buzzard x 1 -flying the lowest I’ve seen it over my house. Ā Very awesome!
  7. Dunnock x 2
  8. Feral Pigeon x 1
  9. Great Tit x 1
  10. Long-tailed tit x 2
  11. Magpie x 2
  12. Woodpigeon x 2

Not sure where the chaffinches, robins and wrens have got to this year, the wren hasn’t even made it on the list yet and we’re over 2 months in!

I’m not sure if I’ll have internet access for the next few days, so don’t worry if I’m not here. Ā I will try and do the finance updates for SaverScene & Saver Scene AustraliaĀ (now closed as I move into gardening as a profession) and any bird lists that I get to see if I have internet access, if not they’ll be a few days late, but will keep record.

A magpie pops up and saves the list of being only 2 birds!

been another hectic day today and I thought I was only going to get to see 2 species of birds and then suddenly a magpie pops up on the window sill, I was very happy, it looked to be having a great time, think it was stealing bulbs from the garden! Ā Here’s my very short list:

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 3
  3. Magpie x 1

The day became fantastically sunny in Edinburgh, Bird Guides Photo of the week.

Another busy day today, but the afternoon was glorious and sunny so I went out to cut back theĀ Buddleia in my garden, the plant recommend on the Butterfly Conservation top 100, while doing this I was treated to the wonderful chirps of the little bobbing long-tailed tits, there were 2 feeding on the fat in the RSPB half coconuts, absolutely superb birds full of character, I’m pretty positive there were more near by but I didn’t see them, so just 2 have been added today:

  1. Blackbird x 1
  2. Blue Tit x 3
  3. Coal Tit x 1
  4. Dunnock x 4
  5. Long-tailed tit x 2
  6. Magpie x 1
  7. Woodpigeon x 2

Terrible list for today!

I was glad to see 6 starlings at the end of today as there’d only been 2 woodpigeons earlier, the day was hectic again, my carpal tunnel is getting better and I’ve started working on the Australian version of finance site Saver Scene – Saver Scene Australia (now closed as I move into gardening as a profession) again as I’d taken a lot of time off to try and get my hands to heal. As well as the workmen still putting in the new central heating system so no access to the back garden again and only looked out the front and had 2 sightings. there were gulls high up and I couldn’t identify them, so this is it for today:

  1. Starlings x 6 – flying over their roost in the beautiful sunset.
  2. Woodpigeon x 2 – they were really into spring activity!

Front garden bird watching today, plus more wildlife gardening tips.

The fog has gottenĀ incrediblyĀ thick here in Edinburgh tonight, who’s bright idea was it to get the central heating replaced in February? Ā Oh that’s right mine! Ā It’s freezing! Ā Due to works going on in all the back rooms today I didn’t really get a chance to see the back garden and instead had to watch a small part of hedge in the front and got one good surprise here’s what I was lucky enough to see:

  1. Blackbird x 2
  2. Carrion crow x 1 – fly over
  3. Dunnock x 1
  4. Grey Heron x 1 – fly over
  5. Woodpigeon x 2

I don’t think I’ve used this photo on here, but one of my regular carrion crows that flies over the garden:

Yesterday I posted up about wildlife gardening and wanted to mention another great post that gives good information about planting not only nectar rich flowers and plants for adult butterflies but also adding plants for caterpillars:Ā Gardening for butterflies – adults v caterpillars | Butterflies and Gardens
